The Long Haul is a community activist center at 3124 Shattuck Ave. across from Le Pena, in Berkeley, near the Ashby BART The Long Haul is an all volunteer, collectively operated, radical community meeting place and activist center. We are we are a collective of collectives. We have been a community meeting place and activist center for 32 years. We are assortment of anarchists and activists primarily dedicated to political and social education and action toward a more just and sustainable world. We lean toward political/anti-authoritarian/anarchist /activist/anti-capitalist groups. We lean away from for-profit businesses and individuals. We are looking for a compatible group or project to share space, responsibilities and vision. The space is currently used by The Infoshop, Slingshot newspaper, Needle Exchange, Food Not Bombs, the Anarchist Study Group, Berkeley Liberation Radio, a zine archive Project, East Bay CoHousing and others. On alternating Sundays, we have an open mic, and oral history project and community Café night fundraisers.
The Long Haul shared common space includes a public computer, Internet access, space on the ground floor that holds about 50 and can be arranged for speakers, meetings or movies (with a large projector and screen) a small kitchen and a bathroom. Our ground floor and bathroom are accessible by wheelchair. We are looking for groups committed to our broad goals were able to reliably pay their portion of costs and successfully participate in our collective process. Such a group would get a lockable small (84 ft.2) office for their exclusive use. Their current share of the costs would be $200 per month. We are currently running a small deficit so that could go up a few dollars a month soon. The space is relatively quiet (not open to the public) 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m. – 3 Tuesday and Friday. Email for more details. The room is available now (flexible move in) but needs to have a rug or floor covering installed prior to occupancy. Because of the collective nature of the space, there is an application process and you will have to attend a meeting in person. You should look at the space before considering applying.
